Elaine Smith hits back
at Howie's accusation of scaremongering
3 June 2011
“European Union Directive 2000/76/EC, Article 3(4) makes it clear that incineration plants include processes such as pyrolysis.”
“Whatever we choose to call it however, it is clear that this plant would have a negative impact on the local environment, including on people’s homes and views.”
“It would also lead to an increase in traffic in an area which already suffers from terrible congestion.”
“Not only is there no need for this plant to meet the waste management needs of North Lanarkshire, it is clear that this is the wrong plant in the wrong location.”
“It is unacceptable to build a waste management facility such as this within such a short radius of homes, schools and nurseries.”
“The reporters stated that there would be no ‘significant’ impacts on human health. I am not prepared to take any risks when it comes to the health of my constituents, particularly young children”
“If the unintended consequence of the new planning legislation is that the wishes of communities are ignored in favour of private profit, then perhaps it is time that planning legislation was revisited. I will be putting that point to the new minister.”
“Rather than attacking the elected member who is clearly representing the views of many thousands of constituents, Mr Howie should consider that he is not wanted in this community and would be better spending his time looking for another location
