Scottish Government asks for comments on proposal to maintain high subsidies for waste gasification and pyrolysis, October 2011

The Scottish Government has published a new document proposing the maintenance of high subsidies, in the form of Renewables Obligations Certificates (ROCs) for 'advanced' forms of waste gasification and pyrolysis. If these are approved, the company will receive 2 ROCs for each megawatt hour of energy it produces.

GAINS believes all forms of waste incineration are fundamentally unsustainable. It has been calculated that burning waste recovers at best around a tenth of the energy used to make the products in our rubbish. Furthermore a high proportion of the products in commercial and municipal waste is plastic, which is made from non-renewable fossil oil. In short, waste incineration destroys resources, wastes energy and harms the environment by producing large amounts of CO2.

Representations must be received by 13 January 2012
