The Great Stink – What can be done?

What is the Abernethy Action Group? We are a group of concerned residents who want to see our village treated with the respect it deserves, and not allowed to become the dumping ground for Central Scotland’s rubbish. If you are concerned for your family’s future and their health, and would like to be kept informed of our activities, or would like to help in any way you can, please contact us on info@abernethyag.co.uk.

What can you do to help? As a resident of Abernethy, you will no doubt be aware of the noxious smells that drift down into the village from Binn Farm – either from SITA’s landfill operation or from TEG’s composting operation. You can do more than just retreat indoors and close the windows, you can phone the Scottish Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA), on the following numbers:

Office hours - 01738 627989

Out of hours – 0800 80 70 60 (24 hour pollution hot line)

Do not think you are being a nuisance when you dial these numbers, SEPA need you to call – without your input, they cannot take action against those responsible for these odours which affect the way of life and the health of everyone who lives in the area.

SITA have planning permission to build an incinerator at Binn Farm, just like the one that Perth have so vehemently opposed at Shore Road, however they now only need a polluters license to operate it. You have an opportunity to stop this right now!  The more we can raise the issue of the poor management of the current operation at Binn, the more chance there will be of SEPA not issuing a license. SEPA investigate the Binn Farm operations on an ongoing basis and details of breaches are reported regularly within their website, www.sepa.org.uk

Remember – when you smell any unpleasant odours in and around the village of Abernethy  please phone SEPA on:

Office hours - 01738 627989

Out of hours – 0800 80 70 60 (24 hour pollution hot line)

It is not just enough to call SEPA; we must let our Councillors know that Abernethy residents are concerned about the incinerator to be built at Binn Farm.  SEPA will be attending the Community Council Meeting at Abernethy Primary School on Thursday 25th March at 7:30pm – please come and let your feelings be known
